Earthships and Aquaponics getting together!

This system was built by James Fry, an Earthship Academy student from 2012, as his independent field study.

The tank contains about 175 gallons of water with a growing bed of Hydroton (clay pellets) media on top.

There are 21 fish in the tank, which are a unique species of Carp commonly found in New Mexico.

This system has produced tomatoes, broccoli, basil, peppers, parsley and lettuce!

Vertical Gardening!

Run out of space? Grow vertical! There are many DIY options if it comes to gardening, and this one is not different either.

The first picture show how you can use a plastic tube to vertical gardening.

  • First cut holes on the side of the tube.
  • Insert another, smaller tube with many tiny holes.
  • Fill up the space around the inner tube with solid soil.
  • Plant the cuttings carefully into the outer tubes holes.
  • Protect Your garden against the wind by attaching it to something…big.
  • Water the garden trough the inner tube. (This method of vertical gardening is water-saving since the evaporative surface is much smaller.)

Go on, do it. It’s Spring already.

CD Cases

A bit of inspiration for the use of all those spare CD cases lying around the house / office.

Pinhole Photography

This is the image I took with the pinhole camera we made at the Justin Quinnel.

How to make a pinhole camera

  • You need two aluminium cans (We used a beer can and a coke can)
  • A pair of good scissors
  • Very fine sand paper
  • A rubber band
  • Black tape
  • A pin

The first thing you need to do when preparing to make your pinhole camera is to cut the base of one of the cans (the coke can) Make a hole in it then try and cut evenly around (Don’t make it too short as it’ll be used to cover up the base of the other can so you can easily put in and take out your photo paper.

The second thing to do is repeat this on the second can (the beer can) but cut of the end with the ring pull.

You can then put the two together so it’s light proof, it should just slide on (You don’t need to tape it as it will be taken on and of)

You will then need to use your sand paper to thin out one area of the can, don’t do it to thin though!

Then you will need to get your pin and poke the can and make a tiny hole (Don’t put the pin all the way through, you want to make the hole as small as possible)

Once you have done that get a bit of the tape and fold some of it over so it’s not sticky, then put it on so it covers the hole, this will act as a shutter.

The rubber band is used so you can put something such as a pencil/pen anything you have to hand so that you can balance the camera if you are placing it somewhere.

When you have done this it’s complete, all you need to do is put in the photo paper. You will have to put it opposite to where the hole is or else you’ll end up with a tiny black dot and nothing else!

When loading photo paper you will have to do it in a room that there is no light in at all, or you will expose the paper.

You will have to experiment a few times to get the exposure right, but when you have got what you wanted you can scan it in then invert it (or don’t, depending on what effect you like) As it will give you a paper negative.
